Things In My House Thursday # 25

>> Thursday, January 15, 2009

I suppose that this is the type of post that could stand on its own, but I think we all know that I have a dismal track record posting outside of my meme.... and it IS about something IN my house.

I've gone through health food / organic / homeopathic - type phases for decades. I vacillate from totally committed "hippie / freak" to simply having made some good changes and being more aware.

One thing I am consistent about is reading labels. It's usually depressing.

While I was at the store yesterday, Mary called to say that she needed some of this:

sugar, dextrose, modified food starch, salt,

disodium phosphate and tetrasodium pyrophosphate,

diglycerides, yellow 5, yellow 6, artificial color, BHA.

YUMMY!!

How does this fit with the simple idea that you should recognize all the ingredients in your "food", be able to pronounce them, and either have them in your kitchen or be able to find them at your local grocery ?

Not very well.

But she needed it for one of her dessert concoctions.

Before you google it, here's the sugary, starchy, salty, phospatey, glyceridy, colored goodness:

Guess we're going to have to start making our OWN organic pudding. Recipes, anyone?

****************

And, maybe, we should start dedicating some of our TIMHTs to our pantries. Muddy came close to this format when she posted about a single serving of mayo.

If they don't fix it soon, you could just have people comment that they have posted and edit your post to add the links.

It is unlikely that this will be the week you get hundreds and hundreds of them.

Well, thanks for ruining boxed pudding for me! LOL! ;-Þ

Seriously, I am realizing more and more that I need to be cooking everything from scratch. If I were rich like Oprah, I could just hire a personal dietician and cook, but having to do it all myself (I know, poor me), it's so much trouble to cook from scratch.

I'm only complaining and whining because I'm feeling the Lord leading me to a healthier lifestyle, so I know it's inevitable, but I don't wanna! ;-)

My goodness - mayo, pudding, what's next! That is a frightening list of ingredients and it DOES make me want to make more things truly "from scratch". I did a TIMHT at my blog - hope Mr. Linky is up soon!

I do believe I have some of that in my pantry right this moment! It's a bit frightening when we think of all the weird things we eat that we can barely pronounce! Great post. :)

Yeah, there's some in my pantry, too. Ingredients can sound horrible, can't they?

I wish had saved the package my Sweet-Tarts came in so I could read those ingredients...LOL!!

Great post!

Thanks for stopping by my blog and saying hi. In return, I have tagged you for a book meme, so come back and see!

P.S. I'm a label reader too, but sometimes (for a few things) I take the "please don't tell me...I like it TOO much and I don't want to know!" 'Cause then it'd be ruined for me! :)

Oh my gosh!!! Sounds horrid when you ask for it by ingredient!!! Good post.

I LOVE this post. SO perfectly said. And I never knew what "gelatin" was made from, until recently reading data like this:

make cornstarch pudding with ingredients you feel comfortable with and you won't ever go back to the box!
above is a link to how I make chocolate pudding.

Thanks for that recipe Lynn; it looks good and sounds easy enough!

I've never seen that brand of cocoa, but I can still get those ingredients readily and mostly organically. :)
