News From the Past - A Consummate Ass

Please forgive the 'language'. I didn't write this stuff.

125 years ago: 1884

A consummate ass yesterday played on a steamboat whistle for his own delectation but to the great annoyance of everyone else in town. The incessant playing of the same tune over and over made wrecks out of the nervous and nervous wrecks out of the phlegmatic. A session on the "rock pile" would perhaps teach him to play another tune and one with not such a high pitch.

And more 'recently':

75 years ago: 1934

Thousands of women have won divorces in Circuit Court here in recent years, but only 61 of them are receiving alimony through the court, a check revealed yesterday. Of these only one woman is drawing as much as $80 a month, the others range downward to $2 and $3 a week with less than $30 as the average.
